Departs / Returns: Hurghada
Setting sail from Hurghada or Port Ghalib, the Brothers Islands Safari is mostly recommended to the more advanced scuba divers. The Brother Islands are in fact the twin peaks of two deep-sea coral columns. The two islands and their surroundings attract a huge variety of fishes of both open-sea species, as well as reef-dwellers. They are also home to an extremely diverse coral population that benefits from the sea currents which dominate the area, supplying an ideal habitat for a vast variety of soft corals. The bigger island of the two (the Big Brother) is located a mile away from its smaller counterpart. A quarter of a mile in total length, it’s rectangular in shape and it’s easily recognized from its Victorian-age beacon that remains the only memorial left of the once prevailing British Colonial Empire. From the very surface to bigger depths, a fantastic underwater landscape is provided by a constant abundance and variety of both soft and hard corals. The area is rich in wildlife, shark encounters are frequent. The smaller one of the two islands is by no means inferior to its big brother. In fact, the upper 100 feet is so rich in coral formations that from a distance the reef’s surface looks like a knitted cap on a head. Wildlife is diverse, there’s always a fair chance to see sharks here. This breath-taking coral reef is home to a great variety of schooling fishes. Those species commonly found at the bigger island here gather in even bigger bait-balls and schools, sometimes making it difficult even to spot the water behind them. Surgeonfish, unicorns and snappers swim by in huge sparkling schools. Much alike in the waters of the bigger island, several shark species visit the area, commonly including grey reef sharks, white-tip reef sharks, hammerheads and tiger sharks, sometimes including even those infamous oceanic white-tips (longimanus).
